The 6 Benefits of Dogs for Mental Health

Our mental health is very important, and anyone can struggle with their mental health from time to time. However, there are lots of things we can do ourselves to help improve our mental health over time. So how can pets support mental wellness? We wanted to highlight the benefits of having pets, especially dogs, for mental health awareness month.

It’s official, pets really can be great for mental health! Studies have shown that having a pet can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, lower blood pressure and even provide some relief for those struggling with mental health issues. Pets provide companionship and a sense of purpose for their owners, which can be especially helpful for those struggling with feelings of loneliness or isolation. Even just sitting and petting your dog can have a calming effect and promote feelings of well-being.

In particular, Dogs are wonderful companions and can be especially good for mental health due to their loyalty and affectionate nature. No wonder that, according to a 2021 survey, 24% of UK households now own a pet dog!

Dogs are naturally playful animals, and playing with them can help reduce stress and anxiety while also promoting feelings of happiness and joy. Engaging in play activities with a dog can also help improve cognitive function and boost energy levels. Engaging in fun activities with your pooch can also provide a sense of connection and social support, as it gives the opportunity to bond and create positive memories – why not check out our popular dog toys, which provide endless of opportunities for fun and playtime together.

Apart from providing companionship, dogs can be good for mental health in many other ways. Spending time with a dog can increase levels of the “feel-good” hormone oxytocin, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. Taking a dog for a walk can also provide an opportunity for exercise and fresh air, which can improve mood and boost energy levels – and many dog walkers may meet other people on dogs on their daily walks too.

Owners also often report that the sense of responsibility that comes with caring for a pet can provide them with purpose, routine and improve self-esteem. This can be especially important for someone who is struggling with their mental health.

Dogs can be great companions for people who are feeling lonely. As social animals who love to spend time with their owners, they can provide a sense of companionship that can be especially helpful for those who may be living alone or feeling isolated. Dogs are loyal and affectionate, and spending time with them can help reduce feelings of loneliness and provide a sense of purpose and connection.

The benefits of other companion animals for mental health

Obviously, we love dogs and see every day the benefit of having loving dogs in our lives. However, cats can also be good for mental health in similar ways to dogs. While cats may not be as social as dogs, they can still provide companionship and affection for their owners. Spending time with a cat can also help to reduce stress and anxiety, and petting a cat has been shown to have a calming effect just as it does for dogs.

Taking good care of a cat can provide a sense of purpose and routine, which can be especially helpful for those struggling with feelings of loneliness or depression. Overall, cats can be great pets for mental health, but it’s important to choose a pet that fits your lifestyle and personality.

Remember if you are struggling with your mental health, it is important to seek some help by telling a friend or family member, speaking to your GP or reaching out to a Mental Health charity, such as MIND, CALM or Samaritans.

Measuring up your pooch for a cable knit sweater

Living in the UK, it can often be quite chilly, even in Spring, so a lightweight dog jumper that is comfortable and stylish is a great accessory to have in your dog’s pawdrobe.

Bew Dogs stocks 2 different types of dog jumpers (both cable knit sweaters): OG cable knits & Phoenix yards. The sizing for these are different so be sure to check the size guide!

Measuring your Bew dog for a jumper is an essential step to ensure that they are comfortable and that you don’t end up ordering something that won’t fit them properly. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Measure the neck: Use a tape measure to measure the circumference of your dog’s neck, right underneath where their collar sits.
  2. Measure the chest: Measure the widest part of your dog’s chest, just behind their front legs.
  3. Measure the length: Measure your dog’s length from the base of their neck to their tail.

Once you have these measurements, you can use them to find the right size jumper for your dog, using our chart below. All jumpers are individually made so sizes may vary very slightly, but our stylish cable knits do have some stretch in them.

Remember, dogs come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes, and products for dogs are not standardised for size in the way they are for us humans. A dog that takes a small collar may not take a small jumper, for example – so It’s always best to measure up!

If you need any help with our size guide, please send us an email at: [email protected] or reach out on one of our social accounts, and we’ll do our best to help.

Bew Dogs has been created for hounds about town and we’ve tried to ensure we can stock all the sizes to cater for this. Right now, our OG cable knit jumpers are predominantly for smaller dogs but our Phoenix yarns have a more generous fit & are available in more sizes too! Peach orange goes to XXL for bigger breeds.

If your size is out of stock… or you have a large breed dog, send us an email and let us know the size you are after, as we’d love to make sure future product lines cater for your Bew Dog’s needs.

What are the 9 best and easiest tips for dog walking without pulling?

A photo of a man's body, holding an orange lead attached to a small orange dog. They are walking without pulling in front of a brick wall.

Walking without pulling can feel really difficult to achieve at times – most dog owners will know what its like to experience their dog pulling on a lead at one time or another. When our pooches are excited to meet their doggy friends at the local park, or sense they’re going on a special adventure, they can be very eager to get to their destination or be freed from a leash to let off some steam.

However, lead pulling is not enjoyable for anyone involved and if not fixed, it can get worse over time. Luckily there are lots of simple things you can do to quickly establish walking without pulling – and most dogs will respond to training quite quickly, if it is done consistently.

Walking without pulling top tips

Try the following tips to help encourage your dog to walk nicely whilst on the lead:

  1. Start with proper lead training and use a well-fitted collar or harness. Of course, we’re biased but if you are looking for a good lead, collar or harness then you should check out our collection. We have a handy size guide to help you find the right ones, and all our collars and harnesses are adjustable, so that you can ensure it fits your pooch properly. The right accessories will help achieve walking without pulling.
  2. Try to teach your dog some basic obedience commands such as “heel” “wait” or “come” at home. General obedience training can reap rewards in other behaviour areas.
  3. Start by walking in a quiet area where there are fewer distractions… if you pooch can already see all his friends having fun ahead of him, this might encourage them to pull and will likely end in a disappointing training session. Equally, if you have more than one dog, you might want to try having short training walks individually.
  4. Reward your dog with high quality treats whenever they stay close to you, remain calm and are walking without pulling. The more you reward positive behaviour, the more you will see it happening. Magic!
  5. Always use positive reinforcement instead of punishment or negative reinforcement… it’s the language our beloved pets understand.
  6. Try to change directions frequently and use a short lead to keep your dog close to your side for walking without pulling. Our rope leads are 150cm long, to give dogs freedom when appropriate, but they can also be doubled up to make a shorter leash, using the handy loop and clip system. The doubled up shorter lead is perfect for busy city walks and lead training. Our brand new Blue rope leads come in both 150cm and 120cm, to give owners more choice. Changing directions often means your dog will have to keep changing their direction too and this encourages them to follow you instead of pulling ahead.
  7. Be consistent with your training and patient with your dog… regular, short sessions are key. Just five to ten minutes a day is more than enough for focused training. In no time at all your dog will be walking without pulling.
  8. Whilst many owners love harnesses – we do too – they can sometimes encourage a dog to use its full bodyweight to pull the lead. If your dog’s pulling is getting particularly strong or difficult to manage, it may actually be better to try a collar, while you help to train them to walk nicely with you.  So, do consider if your dog is better suited to a harness or collar for training.
  9. If your own training isn’t working, you can also seek professional help from a dog trainer or a behaviourist.

We hope these tips help… how did it go? Do you have any additional tips or advice that we can share? Let us know at: [email protected] or over on our Facebook or Instagram pages.

Our First Exhibitor Event: Thame Country Fair

We had a very exciting weekend at Thame Country Fair last week, and were pleased to meet so many of you at our first exhibitor event. Being a new and independent business, fairs and events are a great way for us to meet potential customers and for you to see our lovely products in person. We got to meet many other small business owners in the dog world, who were full of tips and advice and of course… the highlight of our weekend was meeting SO many gorgeous doggies, as you can see from our photos.

There were several activities and events that are of interest to dog owners. One of the main attractions is the dog show, which features a range of competitions for different breeds and sizes of dogs, such as Best in Show, Prettiest Bitch, and Handsomest Dog. We were set up opposite the main ring so got to see all the contestants and of course, the lucky winners too.

There were also dog agility demonstrations and competitions, where dogs and their owners navigate through obstacle courses. And rare breeds were shown, we very much enjoyed seeing all the rare breed gun dogs and chatting to their owners.

We were especially pleased to be able to share our new Spring Harness collection, before it officially launched on our website last week. Super soft and extra stylish, our herringbone pattern adjustable harnesses are available in either sky blue, mint green or cream designs. They have a super soft material for ultimate pet comfort and are breathable and durable – and as you can see from our pictures, our furry friends were really taken by them!

We ran a free raffle over the weekend to win one of our pastel rope leads. The lucky winner was selected at random and has now been notified via email. Our next event will be at Wandsworth Bridge Road in London on Sunday 21 May – we hope to see lots of you there and we’ll be running another free raffle to win some Bew Dogs goodies.

Got ideas for where we should be exhibiting next… send as an email at: [email protected] or send us a message on instagram to let us know.

Bew Dogs Official Launch Party

We were over the moon to finally be able to launch Bew Dogs with an intimate party at The Captain Cook, pet-friendly venue in West London. As you can see from the pictures, we were overwhelmed with guests, both pooches and their owners and everyone loved getting a sneak peak of some of our products.

The pub put on a lovely spread for the human guests, whilst pooches were treated to delicious, home baked and personalised woof bones from Pawfect Little Barkery – and boy did they go down a treat! Of course, everyone was well watered too.

Our product showcase went down particularly well and we were beyond excited to finally be able to share all the products we’ve been working on for almost a year with real live people and pooches – and receive some genuine feedback! In particular our cute cable knit jumpers, pastel rope leads and matching rope collars were big hits! And of course, what dog doesn’t love an (almost) indestructible dog toy. There was also a lot of interest in our earth friendly, biodegradable poop bags – no one wants to run out of these!

It was especially great for us to meet some wonderful local business owners, specialising in the dog world, including local groomers, dog walkers, event hosts and even a puppy yoga business (check the bottom of this article for links to all their sites for further info). And of course, Amie our photographer specialises in working with dogs and as you can see below, she did an amazing job giving all our woof-guests their own mini shoot.

We picked up so much great advice and ideas and can’t wait to share our future plans with everyone soon.

Head over to our Bew Dogs Instagram page and check out our highlights for lots of candid footage from all our guests – we hope everyone that was able to join us had as much fun as we did!
