6 Ways to Chase Away the January Blues: Achieve a Happy January with Your Dog

After the holiday season, and with cold and dark nights drawing in, it’s very common and normal for us humans to experience the January Blues. Perhaps we’ve overindulged a little on Christmas cake, or need to make financial cut backs after spending a lot during December. Coupled with heading back to work and the normality of day-to-day routines, it’s easy to see why January can be thought of as the most depressing month of the year, perhaps bringing a feeling of emptiness or monotony. BUT remember… whether you have pets yourself or your friends, family or neighbours keep a dog you can help take care of, they can be incredible companions during this time, bringing joy and positivity. The following 6 tips can help you to beat the January Blues in 2024 with your furry friend.

1. Take a moment to appreciate the unique emotional connection you have with the dogs (or other pets) in your life

It’s hard to stay blue for long when we think about the loyalty, unconditional love and companionship that dogs provide us with. How does your dog cheer you up when you’re feeling down? Perhaps they’re always nearby to provide company or give a cuddle. Perhaps they’re the first one to greet you as you come through the door? We bet they’re always happy to see you and this should be heart-warming.

2. Combat January Blues with science – dogs help lower stress levels

The start of a new year can bring a fresh start and new goals… most of us love to set some New Years resolutions. But additional pressure from work, finance, health or fitness goals can feel stressful and stress can add to feelings of sadness or depression. The good news is that there is scientific evidence behind the stress-relieving benefits of having a dog. Interacting with dogs can lower cortisol levels, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of calmness. Dogs are known for their soothing presence and the act of petting them, teaching them a simple new trick or playing with them can cheer us up too. So go ahead and make sure you spend just ten minutes of quality time with your dog today, and it will benefit you both.

3. Keep a healthy daily routine to avoid the January Blues

Dogs love routine. If your dogs are anything like ours, they know what time they want to get up, have their morning snack and when to go for walkies. And if we’re not ready to fulfil their routine, they’re going to nudge us to remind us! Many dogs are more relaxed don’t need to do the same things at exactly the same time every day. However all dogs need a basic routine of love and care fulfilled each day, ensuring their needs are met. And this is great for us too, as it means we also keep to a simple daily routine. Why not have your own morning snack while you feed the dogs or make yourself a warming drink, such as cup of tea or hot chocolate? Be sure to look after yourself in January and have small treats where you can to avoid those January Blues, and incorporate these into your daily routine.

4. Keep up social connections despite party season being over for now

Many of us can feel quite exhausted in January, especially if December was filled with social events, parties and Christmas visits with family. So, it’s understandable that in January we’ll be more inclined to stay home, rest and recuperate. But social connection is a key way to avoid the January Blues… taking time to rest doesn’t mean having to miss out on all social connection and dogs are the perfect way to seek this out. If possible, walk your dog at the same time of day and the same place and see if you bump into other friendly dog walkers. It can be nice to stop for a short chat and get to meet some of the local doggos. Also, whilst many like to take a social media detox in January (which we think is a great idea), for others active social media accounts is a great way to keep up some social connections without leaving the house… just try to keep some balance in your online and offline activities to ensure you avoid those January Blues. You could also offer to take care of a friends pet for a short time, or ask a neighbour to walk your dogs together once a week.

5. Get outside and get (lightly) active

Yes it’s cold and dark in January and sometimes the British weather simply doesn’t allow us to keep up the dog walking we’d do in the summer. However, when you can, be sure to get outside with your pooch so they can get their daily exercise. If your dog doesn’t need a lot of exercise, then getting outside for just a 10 or 15 minute street walk on the lead can be hugely beneficial for mental health. If you’re able to, plan longer trips at weekends or on days when you don’t have to work, that can be done during daylight hours. Visiting new spots can be a wonderful way to boost your mood, entertain your dog and avoid spending money as many lovely dog walks around the UK are completely free!

6. Finally, if you can afford to, treat your pooch in the January sales and support a small business at the same time

We understand that many people right now will be trying to cut back on spending during January. But if your budget this month does stretch to a treat, it’s a good time to make some wonderful savings in the January sales and grab a bargain. We hope these little tips give an idea for how your relationship with the dogs in your life can spark some joy this January. Whatever your plans, remember that if you are feeling down and it seems to you like it could be a little more than the January Blues, then don’t wait to seek some advice from your GP, or talk to a friend or family member or a mental health charity, such as the Samaritans. The sooner mental health conditions are treated, usually the quicker recovery can be so its important to get that expert help when needed.

Deck the Paws: 5 tips for pet friendly Christmas decorations

Christmas is a wonderful time of year for most of us, and pets can really add to the festive joy. There are so many wonderful ways to get your precious pooch involved in the celebrations… after all, dogs love a little holiday treat as much as the rest of us!

However, there is one thing in particular that we’ve found a bit more difficult at Christmas time since having dogs at home! Christmas decorations… they’re normally bright, shiny and come in a range of different colours! No wonder our pooches thing all the Christmas decorations are their new toys to play with.

Given chewing or ingesting plastic nasties can be harmful to pets – and certainly won’t improve your festive displays – we’ve put together some great tips to ensure you can deck the halls this Christmas and decorate away, whilst keeping the space safe for all pets.

  1. Keep the tree safe: anyone who has had a puppy around a Christmas tree for the first time will know how quickly they want to explore it! It’s a great idea to do some training to prepare your dog for the tree’s arrival, and WAG has some great tips for this.

    Of course, training can take time, and depending on your pooch’s perseverance it may be more practical and sensible to make the tree a safe space. Do this by choosing a stable tree stand and secure the tree to prevent curious pets from tipping it over. Choose robust tree decorations that will not smash if they are knocked over and ensure any towards the bottom of the tree and pet-friendly. If you have a real tree then avoid adding any chemicals to the tree that may be harmful to pets – a little water topped up when necessary should be all a good quality tree needs to last the festive period.

  2. Avoid tinsel and plastic garlands: At Bew Dogs HQ we used to love tinsel, it’s very nostalgic! However, as well as being pretty bad for the environment, it’s also toxic and a choking hazard for adventurous pups! We’ve easily found more eco-friendly and safe alternatives, just look for decorations made of paper, card, fabric or ribbon… these can even be homemade, and needn’t break the bank.

    If you already have tinsel and can’t bear to part with it, no problem… just be sure to keep it high and out of reach of wandering paws, and be sure to keep reusing it to keep it out of landfill.

  3. Choose your Christmas plants with care: Surprisingly, a number of popular and traditional Christmas plants are toxic for dogs. However, with some easy swaps its still possible to decorate your space with festive florals.

    TOXIC to dogs: Poinsettia, Holly, Mistletoe, Christmas Rose, Yew.

    SAFE for dogs: Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera), African Violet (Saintpaulia), Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum), Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens).

  4. Pick out pet-friendly lighting: some lovely festive lighting can make all the difference at Christmas time, and is a great alternative to a tree or other decorations. Just remember to keep choose LED lighting where possible, which is much safer for pets as it doesn’t heat up and therefore isn’t a fire or burn risk. Also be sure to keep wires safely out of reach.

  5. Choose these options instead of breakable ornaments: There are many pet-friendly ornaments that can be bought or made and are less hazardous than their breakable alternatives. Look our for any decorations and Christmas ornaments that are made of wood, felt, solid plastic, fabric, metal or even natural products like sea shells. Just avoid glass, china and other fragile materials.

Whilst there is a place for beautifully wrapped parcels for special pupmail gifts or occasions, all customers now have the option to receive their order “naked” with no additional tissue paper from us. Best 5 Summer Dog Walks in London

Who is interested in our take on the best places for summer dog walks in London? It’s still summer in the UK right… well at least we hope it is! There is no better time than Summer to spend the weekend out dog walking, enjoying some beautiful weather and surroundings. Walking is excellent exercise for us humans and all healthy dogs love to go on walking adventures too.

Ever find yourself asking… where is the best place for dog walks in London? We’ve put together a list of our favourite places to take the pooches across this big city… they’re all beautiful and free! Just grab your Bew Dogs rope lead and easy-fit collar or harness, and you can be on your way for a beautiful and relaxing dog walk in London:  

  1. Richmond Park: It is a vast and beautiful open space in West London with lots of grass and trees, perfect for your dog to run around and explore small woodland areas. Richmond Park really is one of the most relaxing and scenic dog walks in London. There are dedicated walking trails but remember, Richmond Park has wild deer, so dogs need to be kept on the lead during birthing season, around May and July and never let your pooch approach any deer for their safety.  
  1. Hampstead Heath: This North London dog-friendly place, which is technically not a “park” has stunning views of London and is a great place to explore with your furry friend. Check out woodland, meadows and trails for this dog walk in London. Do you and your dog love swimming? Hampstead Heath ponds also allow dogs to join the owners for a dip – perfect in the Summer!
  1. Greenwich Park: we absolutely love Greenwich Park for a dog walk in London. It is a picturesque Royal park located in South-East London and is perfect for dog walking in Spring, Summer or just about any season. Check out Meetup for several dog breed meets in Greenwich Park, such as the Frenchie walk on the final Sunday of every month.  This choice is number one if you want stunning panoramic views of the London skyline – what a way to end a dog walk in London.
  1. Victoria Park: Situated East side, this is one of the city’s biggest parks & has no other wild animals, offering several designated areas for dogs to run off-lead. The park is mostly fenced in, has a pavilion and boating lake – what more could you ask for for a lovely summer walk. Victoria Park is conveniently located close to many other areas, making it easy to extend your dog walk in London and explore nearby parks and attractions as well.
  1. Hyde Park: centrally located, this is one of the largest parks in London and can get quite busy. However, it has plenty of space for your dog to explore on and off lead, plus the river Serpentine and several cute cafes for human and dog treats. Whether you’re from in or out of town, dog walks in Hyde Park come with many famous landmarks to see, including the Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain and the Speakers’ Corner. Don’t forget that there are largescale events in Hyde Park at points throughout the year, including festivals and Winter Wonderland.

After spending the whole of a very warm June in our London pop up boutique store, we’re ready to get back on the road and visit some fantastic dog festivals, fairs and events… we’ve got a really busy July planned. Wondering what to do with your spare time and best friend throughout July? Check out our calendar below, as there are lots of different dog-friendly events in and around London, that you might want to check out.

Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th July – Kingston

Looking for fun things to do in or near London with your dog? We’re spending the weekend in Kingston. Check out the amazing Kingston Dog Day on Saturday 8th, which is free to visit and will feature lots of amazing dog businesses in the market, including Bew Dogs. Local restaurants will be putting on limited edition dog menus. Bentall’s Department Store will be hosting a pop-up dog photography studio in their pet department on Kingston Dog Day, with award-winning dog photographer Amie Barron.

Be sure to check out The Four Legged Foodies, who are hosting the Day for more exciting details! Can’t make 8th July… there will be a whole weekend of fun in August at Kings Cross Dog weekend (more details to be revealed soon).

Staying in the area for Sunday 9 July, we’ve been invited to Ham and Petersham Dog Show, where again there will be lots of wonderful small dog businesses. Come along and enter your pooch into one of the show events on the day… we’ll be helping to judge. Tickets are only £2, under 5s go free and all proceeds for the day are split between two animal charities. We can’t wait to be there!

Saturday 22 July – Beaconsfield

We’re suppaw excited to be heading to Beaconsfield on 22 July for a day of Pup Up Café! The whole day is Hawaiian themed, and the special events for pugs, frenchies, dachshunds and doodles are spread throughout the day. We have part of the amazing Revolution Beaconsfield venue (it has parking!) all to ourselves for pups to mingle in a safe, secure space! Be quick with tickets on this one as Beaconsfield is usually a sell out event.

Sunday 23rd July – Camden

We’re so excited to head back to North London and have a pop up stall at the wonderful Pets at Home store in Camden! This boutique store has a small but lovely team who are so welcoming to small dog businesses. We really enjoyed meeting lots of new fur friends when we were there earlier this year and are honoured they have invited us back. If you’re local to North London, do pop in on a weekend as they are often supporting small London based independent businesses, and bringing new and exciting products to their local community. We’ll be there for the whole day on Sunday 23rd July.

Sunday 30th July – Shepherds Bush

We’re rounding out the month of fun events with a final dog show in West London at Wormwood Scrubs… again there will be lots of pooches enjoying a nice day and many fun competitions to enter your little (or large) one into. Check out Scrubs Dog Show for the day’s schedule. This event is completely free and the small fee to enter the dog show goes to The Mayhew charity. We are donating the prizes for the lucky winners… so make sure you join us and enter for your chance to get your paws on some Bew Dogs goodies!

Bew Dogs X Venture Studios

To celebrate the opening of our very first Pop Up dog boutique shop on Lillie Road, in Fulham… we have joined up with the amazing Venture Photography to bring all our customers a pawsome special offer.

Venture Photography are gifting a fabulous photoshoot at their London studio, for you and your dog or dogs, which includes a framed A4 photo of your choice absolutely free! This amazing deal is available for every Bew Dogs customer that spends a minimum of £35 either online or in our London Pop Up Shop all month.

We took our pack down to the studio to experience the free photoshoot for ourselves and we had an amazing time! It was really fun, with Brodie from Venture making us really comfortable and knowing exactly how to get the dogs to pose and always getting the shot! We were only there for an hour, the time really flew by and we were amazed at just how many brilliant photos Brodie captured.

We’ve included a few here and will be sharing more on our instagram and Facebook pages over the coming weeks. For anyone who would like to see our free framed print, it is on display at our Pop Up shop in West London.

The Bew Dogs Pop Up shop is open every day until Sunday 2 July, from 10am til 5:30. The location is 10 Lillie Road, in Fulham SW6 1TS. We are very close to the BBC Earth Experience and West Brompton Station (2 minutes walk for both overground and underground), and we’re right next to The Hoarder Coffee Shop and opposite the Lillie Langtry pub for refreshments.

The 6 Benefits of Dogs for Mental Health

Our mental health is very important, and anyone can struggle with their mental health from time to time. However, there are lots of things we can do ourselves to help improve our mental health over time. So how can pets support mental wellness? We wanted to highlight the benefits of having pets, especially dogs, for mental health awareness month.

It’s official, pets really can be great for mental health! Studies have shown that having a pet can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, lower blood pressure and even provide some relief for those struggling with mental health issues. Pets provide companionship and a sense of purpose for their owners, which can be especially helpful for those struggling with feelings of loneliness or isolation. Even just sitting and petting your dog can have a calming effect and promote feelings of well-being.

In particular, Dogs are wonderful companions and can be especially good for mental health due to their loyalty and affectionate nature. No wonder that, according to a 2021 survey, 24% of UK households now own a pet dog!

Dogs are naturally playful animals, and playing with them can help reduce stress and anxiety while also promoting feelings of happiness and joy. Engaging in play activities with a dog can also help improve cognitive function and boost energy levels. Engaging in fun activities with your pooch can also provide a sense of connection and social support, as it gives the opportunity to bond and create positive memories – why not check out our popular dog toys, which provide endless of opportunities for fun and playtime together.

Apart from providing companionship, dogs can be good for mental health in many other ways. Spending time with a dog can increase levels of the “feel-good” hormone oxytocin, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. Taking a dog for a walk can also provide an opportunity for exercise and fresh air, which can improve mood and boost energy levels – and many dog walkers may meet other people on dogs on their daily walks too.

Owners also often report that the sense of responsibility that comes with caring for a pet can provide them with purpose, routine and improve self-esteem. This can be especially important for someone who is struggling with their mental health.

Dogs can be great companions for people who are feeling lonely. As social animals who love to spend time with their owners, they can provide a sense of companionship that can be especially helpful for those who may be living alone or feeling isolated. Dogs are loyal and affectionate, and spending time with them can help reduce feelings of loneliness and provide a sense of purpose and connection.

The benefits of other companion animals for mental health

Obviously, we love dogs and see every day the benefit of having loving dogs in our lives. However, cats can also be good for mental health in similar ways to dogs. While cats may not be as social as dogs, they can still provide companionship and affection for their owners. Spending time with a cat can also help to reduce stress and anxiety, and petting a cat has been shown to have a calming effect just as it does for dogs.

Taking good care of a cat can provide a sense of purpose and routine, which can be especially helpful for those struggling with feelings of loneliness or depression. Overall, cats can be great pets for mental health, but it’s important to choose a pet that fits your lifestyle and personality.

Remember if you are struggling with your mental health, it is important to seek some help by telling a friend or family member, speaking to your GP or reaching out to a Mental Health charity, such as MIND, CALM or Samaritans.

Measuring up your pooch for a cable knit sweater

Living in the UK, it can often be quite chilly, even in Spring, so a lightweight dog jumper that is comfortable and stylish is a great accessory to have in your dog’s pawdrobe. While the weather is still changing we’ve got an awesome offer on our Cable Knit jumpers, which are ONLY £10 until 14th May 2023!

Measuring your Bew dog for a jumper is an essential step to ensure that they are comfortable and that you don’t end up ordering something that won’t fit them properly. Follow these simple steps: 

  1. Measure the neck: Use a tape measure to measure the circumference of your dog’s neck, right underneath where their collar sits. 
  2. Measure the chest: Measure the widest part of your dog’s chest, just behind their front legs. 
  3. Measure the length: Measure your dog’s length from the base of their neck to their tail. 

Once you have these measurements, you can use them to find the right size jumper for your dog, using out chart below. All jumpers are individually made so sizes may vary very slightly, but our stylish cable knits do have some stretch in them.  

Remember, dogs come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes, and products for dogs are not standardised for size in the way they are for us humans. A dog that takes a small collar may not take a small jumper, for example – so It’s always best to measure up!
