The Cold Truth About Winter and Dogs: How to Keep Yours Winterproofed and Well

cute black pomeranian with a stylish purple collar and peach rope lead from bew dogs, perfect dog style products for 2025

Winter has a habit of sneaking up on us — one minute it’s muddy paws and damp walks, the next it’s icy pavements and breath you can see. While some dogs take colder weather in their stride, others feel it far more than we realise. And no, it’s not just the tiny ones in jumpers giving you that look.

As temperatures continue to drop across the UK, it’s important for us to adjust our routines to keep pets safe, healthy, and comfortable. From chilly walks to cold nights indoors, winter brings a few extra things every dog owner should keep an eye on. The good news? Keeping your dog comfortable, cosy and winter-ready doesn’t need to be complicated. A few small changes can make a big difference — and your dog will absolutely notice.

Do Dogs Feel the Cold?

Yes – dogs can feel the cold just like humans. While breeds with thick coats (such as Huskies or Malamutes) tolerate lower temperatures better, many dogs are vulnerable to cold weather, especially:

  • Small breeds
  • Short-haired dogs
  • Puppies and senior dogs
  • Dogs with health conditions

Even hardy breeds can suffer from hypothermia or frostbite if exposed to extreme cold temperatures for too long.

Keep Winter Walks Safe and Comfortable

Adjust Walk Lengths

Shorter, more frequent walks are often better in cold weather. If it’s freezing, wet, or windy, limit outdoor time and monitor your dog closely for signs of discomfort.

Protect Paws from Ice and Salt

Grit, salt, and ice can irritate or burn your dog’s paw pads. After walks:

  • Rinse paws with warm water
  • Dry thoroughly
  • Check for cracks or redness

Dog booties or paw balm can provide extra protection during icy conditions if needed but its best to avoid gritted paths.

Dress for the Weather

For many dogs, an extra layer makes all the difference. Cable knit dog jumpers are a great winter option, helping dogs retain body heat while remaining comfortable and flexible.

A well-fitting jumper is especially beneficial for:

  • Short-haired breeds
  • Smaller dogs
  • Older dogs who feel the cold more easily

High-quality knitwear provides warmth without restricting movement, making it ideal for everyday winter walks. Bew Dogs’ phoenix yarn jumpers are super soft, stylish, stretchy and machine washable as well – keeping your dog warm this winter. At Bew Dogs, we design stylish, comfortable walking accessories for small to medium dogs, made for everyday use rather than training or heavy no-pull correction.

Warm and Comfortable Sleeping Areas

During winter, dogs should sleep in a warm, draught-free area of the home. You can help by:

  • Adding extra blankets or bedding
  • Keeping beds off cold floors
  • Moving sleeping areas away from doors or windows

A cosy environment helps dogs regulate their body temperature overnight – just like us!

Winter Nutrition and Hydration

Dogs may burn more energy keeping warm, particularly if they’re active outdoors. While most dogs don’t need major dietary changes, ensure they’re eating a balanced diet and maintaining a healthy weight.

Hydration is just as important in winter:

  • Make sure water bowls don’t freeze
  • Refresh water regularly
  • Encourage drinking, even in cold weather

Watch for Cold Weather Health Issues

Be aware of signs that your dog may be struggling with the cold, including:

  • Shivering or trembling
  • Lethargy
  • Pale gums
  • Reluctance to go outside

If you have any concerns about your dogs health or wellbeing, always seek veterinary advice.

Extra Winter Safety Tips for Dog Owners

  • Never leave dogs unattended in cold cars
  • Store antifreeze securely – it’s extremely toxic to dogs
  • Dry your dog thoroughly after wet walks
  • Keep up with regular grooming to maintain coat health
  • if outside walks aren’t possible – entertain your dog indoors with scent work, toys or training

Keeping Dogs Stylish and Warm This Winter

Practical winter care doesn’t mean compromising on style. Thoughtfully designed dog clothing can provide warmth while still looking great. Bew Dogs cable knit jumpers are designed with comfort, fit, and warmth in mind, making them a perfect winter essential for dogs who need an extra layer when temperatures drop. Our harness collection includes high quality, breathable material with a padded body, perfect for warmth in the winter and cool in the summer.

Warm, Happy Dogs All Winter Long

Cold weather doesn’t have to be uncomfortable for dogs. With the right care, a warm home environment, and appropriate winter clothing, your dog can stay happy and protected all season long.

Why Luxury Velvet is the Perfect Harness Material for your Spoilt Pooch This Winter

Winter walks can be magical — crisp air, frosty mornings, and your dog bounding through fallen leaves. But chilly weather calls for comfort, as well as style. That’s where velvet dog harnesses come in. Soft, luxurious, and snug, they’re the ultimate winter dog accessory for fashion-forward pups who love to stay warm and comfortable. At Bew Dogs, velvet is a winner for us because we design stylish and super comfortable walking accessories for predominantly for small to medium dogs, perfect for everyday use (rather than training or heavy no-pull correction).

5 reasons velvet is the only harness you need this winter

1. Velvet Keeps Your Dog Cosy on Cold Days

Velvet’s dense, plush texture offers natural warmth — ideal for chilly walks. Unlike basic nylon harnesses, our velvet harnesses feel gentle against your dog’s fur and provide a little extra insulation during colder months.

Tip: Pair with a cosy cable knit jumper for an extra layer of warmth during frosty morning strolls.

2. Soft on Fur, Gentle on Skin

Cold weather can make dogs’ skin more sensitive. Our soft velvet harness design helps prevent rubbing and irritation — especially for larger breeds that need secure yet comfortable support. The smooth lining and adjustable fit make it perfect for long walks, even on crisp winter days. Adjustable at both the neck and body, and available in 5 sizes – XXS to L – every dog can find the perfect fitting velvet harness!

3. Luxurious Look for a Stylish Winter Outfits

Velvet isn’t just practical — it’s beautiful. The subtle sheen and rich texture give your dog’s look an elegant, high-end finish. Your dog deserves to look as good as they feel, and our pink velvet harness is made to stand out on grey winter walks (and in every photo!).

4. Pairs Perfectly with Winter Layers

Thicker coats and jumpers are common in colder weather — but not all harnesses fit comfortably over them. Our adjustable velvet harnesses are designed to layer easily without restricting movement or comfort, so your dog can stay snug and stylish all season long. Just adjust the body easily and safely.

5. Built for Comfort and Control

Even in icy or muddy conditions, your dog’s harness should give you confidence and control. The BEW Dogs velvet harness combines strong, durable hardware with a soft feel — meaning it’s both functional and fashionable. Because comfort shouldn’t come at the cost of safety.

  8. Encourages Conscious Consumerism
Our Puppy Product Recycling Programme encourages customers to think carefully about what they purchase. It promotes conscious consumerism by allowing pet owners to buy what they truly need, knowing that they won’t have to discard products that are still in good condition. 1. Colour Trends for 2025: Soft Pastels, metallics and deep colour-drenching

Just as fashion for humans has its seasonal palettes, dog fashion follows suit, with exciting new colours making their way into luxury dog accessories in 2025.

  • Soft Pastels: For those looking for elegance and sophistication, pastels will continue to be popular. Soft shades like lavender, peach, and mint green create a calming, chic look – perfect for the woman who wants to pair her stylish attire with her dog’s look.
  • Metallics & Deep Jewel Tones: Luxurious metallics like gold, silver, and bronze will grace the finest collars and leashes, adding a touch of glamour. Additionally, deep jewel tones like emerald green and midnight blue will be perfect for evening walks or special occasions, ensuring your dog’s accessories shine brightly. Keep to one or two deep colours to elevate your dog’s style in 2025.

2. Sustainable Fashion: Eco-Friendly Trends for 2025

Sustainability isn’t just for your wardrobe – it’s now making waves in dog fashion as well. As luxury meets eco-consciousness, the 2025 trends will reflect a growing demand for sustainable pet products. Here are a few ways you can stay stylish while being kind to the planet:

Recycled and Biodegradable Products: From eco-friendly collars to biodegradable poo bags, it’s clear that sustainability is becoming as important in pet fashion as it is in human fashion. At Bew Dogs, we are dedicated to offering products that merge style and responsibility and leading the way.

Eco-Friendly Materials: Look for accessories that are made from durable materials and built to last – our products might be stylish but they are not fast fashion! These materials not only help protect the environment but also offer softness and comfort that your dog will appreciate, sending less to landfill and being used again and again.

3. Must-Have Accessories for 2025: Elevating Your Dog’s Style

For those who view their dog as an extension of their own personality, stylish accessories are a must. In 2025, expect to see these accessories reigning supreme.

  • Chic Harness, Collars and Leads: Gone are the days of plain leather collars. Now, it’s all about luxury, comfort and stylish accessories. At Bew Dogs, we pride ourselves on offering these high-end accessories that provide comfort and style. After all, a harness and lead set isn’t just for walks – it’s an essential part of your dog’s outfit!
  • Luxurious Sweaters & Coats: Cosy and oh so cute – luxurious cable knit sweaters, plush cashmere scarves, and sleek dog coats will be all the rage. These items aren’t just functional for the colder months; they also ensure that your dog is always stylish, whether lounging at home or strolling through the park.
  • Sailor Bows & Bow Ties: For special occasions or just everyday flair, bows are a fun and fashionable choice. Think matching colours, luxury materials like velvet and “less is more” to add personality without compromising on elegance.

4. The Rise of Smart Accessories: Technology Meets Fashion

In 2025, fashion-forward dogs will be rocking more than just stylish collars and coats – they’ll be sporting high-tech accessories designed to enhance their safety, comfort, and convenience.

  • Smart Collars: Collars that track your dog’s activity, health, and location are becoming more popular. These accessories offer practical benefits while still maintaining a stylish appearance. Think sleek, minimalist designs with integrated technology that seamlessly fits into your dog’s wardrobe.
  • LED Accessories: As the days get shorter, dogs can still shine with LED collars and leashes that provide visibility during night walks. Fashionable yet practical, these accessories combine luxury with function, ensuring your dog’s safety while adding a cool, modern touch to their look.

5. What’s Out in 2025: Pet Fashion Faux Pas

While dog fashion is all about experimenting with new trends, it’s also important to know what’s slipping out of style. Here’s what to avoid in 2025.

  • Overly Flashy Logos: In 2025, we’re moving towards a more refined, subtle aesthetic. Excessive branding on collars or coats may feel dated, with luxury brands embracing understated elegance over big, bold logos. Think minimalist designs, subtle textures, and high-quality materials that speak for themselves.
  • Excessive Bling: While a little sparkle can add flair, over-the-top rhinestones or glittery accessories may fall out of favour to more sophisticated, timeless looks. Luxury is all about restraint and refined details.
  • Fussy, overdone patterns: We’re sure to continue seeing patterned dog accessories, which can be cute but has been truly done to death! Expect fussy patterns to take a backseat this year to make way for stylish and curated colour pieces instead.

6. How to Create a Signature Style for Your Dog

Now that you know what’s trending in dog fashion, how do you create a signature style for your own dog? Start by considering your dog’s personality and your own style preferences, and check you have the following in your paw-drobe

  • Dog Walking Bag: the ultimate functional item for all dog owners, dog walking bags will remain a staple accessory for 2025. Fed up of boring bags that need to be dropped off at home before brunch? Check out Bew Dogs’ stylish velvet walking bags, and match this to your pooch’s outfit at the same time.
  • Quality Harness: love pastel colours but own a mud monster? Consider saving lighter colours for dry months or special occasions, always chose durable products that are machine washable and pick a darker colour drenched harness for everyday wear instead, and your pup can stay stylish everyday.
  • Matching leads: Why not match the colour of your lead (or leads) to the rest of your pet’s paw-drobe. chose colours that are complimentary and ensure you have a stylish, curated look on every walk.
