When you’re choosing a harness for a puppy or small dog, it is tempting to simply pick the cutest one. And, obviously, we are very much here for a gorgeous walking set. But comfort, fit and adjustability should always come first.
The right harness should feel light enough for little bodies, secure without being restrictive, and comfortable for everyday adventures—from the first few wobbly puppy walks to coffee runs, park days and everything in between.
It’s important to find a range that caters to your pooch’s specific size, especially if they require a teeny XXL harness.
Start with fit, not breed
A Chihuahua, mini dachshund, toy poodle and small cockapoo may all be small dogs, but that does not mean they need the same size harness. Their chest shape, neck size and coat can all make a difference.
Always measure your own dog rather than choosing based on breed alone. For the best fit, you will need their neck and chest measurement, then compare these to the size guide on the product page.

Look for a harness with room to adjust
Puppies grow quickly. One minute their first harness fits perfectly; the next, it feels a little snug around the chest. An adjustable harness gives you more room to get the fit right while they are growing, and is equally helpful for adult small dogs with trickier proportions.
A good harness should sit securely around the chest and body without pinching or rubbing. You should be able to comfortably slide two fingers beneath the straps - but it should not be loose enough for your dog to wriggle backwards out of it.
Check the fit again after the first few walks, and keep an eye on the areas behind their front legs. If you notice rubbing, slipping or restricted movement, it is time to make an adjustment or reassess the size.
Keep it comfortable for everyday wear
Little dogs do not need big, bulky walking gear. A harness should feel soft and lightweight enough for them to move naturally, whether they are trotting beside you, investigating every leaf on the pavement or having a burst of zoomies in the garden.
Look for:
- Soft material against the chest and body
- Adjustable neck and chest straps
- Secure, easy-to-use fastenings
- A shape that allows natural shoulder movement
- A fit that sits clear of the armpits
The aim is not to overcomplicate it. It is simply to choose something your dog can wear comfortably and confidently on everyday walks.
A harness will not teach loose lead walking - but it can make learning kinder
Puppies are still figuring everything out. They stop suddenly, dart towards leaves, say hello to everyone and occasionally decide a walk is the perfect time to become completely immovable (but this always improves with time).
A well-fitted harness spreads pressure across the body rather than concentrating it around the neck, which makes it a comfortable option for walks while they learn. It will not magically stop pulling - consistent, kind training does that - but it can make those early adventures easier for both of you.
