How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness: The Complete Bew Dogs Fitting Guide

Getting the right harness fit is one of the most important steps in keeping your dog safe, comfortable and happy on walks. A harness that is too loose can allow your dog to slip out, while one that is too tight can restrict movement and cause rubbing or discomfort - and these are the two most common complaints we see at events.

Taking a few simple measurements before ordering can help you choose the perfect size first time.

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to measure your dog for a harness and how to check that the fit is correct once it arrives.

Why Harness Fit Matters

  • A properly fitted, good quality harness will:
  • Allow your dog to move naturally
  • Prevent escape during walks
  • Prevent rubbing under the legs or chest
  • Distribute pressure more evenly than a collar alone
  • Keep your dog comfortable during longer walks and adventures

At Bew Dogs, our collection of harnesses are designed to be secure, comfortable and adjustable, making them suitable for a wide range of breeds and body shapes.

We’ve been able to help customers with more difficult to fit breeds due to their natural body shape, such as dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Pugs and Toy breeds. So, whether you’re looking for a harness for a cockapoo, Chihuahua or a Chow Chow… just use our guide below to find the perfect sized harness from Bew Dogs.

What You’ll Need

Before measuring your dog, grab:

  • A soft tape measure
  • A pen and paper (or your phone)
  • A few treats to keep your dog still

If you don’t have a tape measure, you can use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler afterwards.

Step 1: Measure Your Dog’s Chest

The chest measurement is the most important measurement when choosing a harness. Place the tape measure around the widest part of your dog’s chest, usually just behind the front legs. The tape should be snug but not tight. Record the measurement in centimetres.

Example

A Labrador may measure around 70cm.

A Cockapoo may measure around 55cm.

A French Bulldog may measure around 60cm.

Always measure your own dog rather than relying solely on breed guides, as dogs can vary significantly in size.

Step 2: Measure Your Dog’s Neck

Take the measurement around the neck using your tape in the same way. This should be the widest part of the neck and should include roughly 2 fingers gap for comfort. The neck circumference should be snug but not tight.

How to Check the Harness Fits Correctly

Once your harness arrives, fit it to your dog and check the following:

You Can Fit Two Fingers Under the Straps

You should be able to comfortably slide two fingers between the harness and your dog’s body. If you cannot fit two fingers underneath, it may be too tight. If there is excessive space, it may be too loose. Our harnesses are adjustable and will usually arrive at the smallest size, so be prepared to loosen the neck or chest straps to get the perfect fit.

The Harness Doesn’t Restrict Movement

  • Your dog should be able to:
  • Walk naturally
  • Sit comfortably
  • Run and play without restriction

Watch them move around the house before heading out on a walk.

There Is No Rubbing

Check behind the front legs and around the chest after the first few walks. A properly fitted harness should not cause rubbing or irritation.

Your Dog Cannot Back Out of the Harness

Gently test the fit while holding the lead. The harness should remain secure without slipping over your dog’s shoulders.

Common Harness Fitting Mistakes

Choosing a Size Based Only on Breed

Not all Labradors, Cockapoos or French Bulldogs are the same size. Always measure your dog rather than relying on breed recommendations.

Leaving the Harness Too Loose

Many owners worry about making a harness too tight and accidentally leave it too loose instead. A loose harness is one of the most common reasons dogs escape during walks.

Ignoring Adjustments

Our harnesses feature adjustable straps to help achieve the perfect fit. Take a few moments to adjust each strap before your first walk.
